Town Mayors Tournament - Monday 3rd May

In a break from tradition the 2010 Town Mayors American Tournament was staged not on a Saturday but on a Bank Holiday Monday - 3rd May

26 club members turned out including a good number of the promising juniors at the club and played in three round robin groups to select the semi finalists

In the first semi final Helen Dyson and Mark Wakefield edged a close encounter with Jeannette Walker and Nathan Scarll whilst in the second semi final an even closer match went to a sudden death tie break and Sue Hayes-Smith and Ian Walker defeated Nathan Garside and Louis Burgess-Beard

A closely fought final saw Sue and Ian come from behind to take the trophy against Helen and Mark

The trophy was presented by Mayor Ernie Clarke who had spent the afternoon at the club and in return Ian Walker presented a cheque for the proceeds of the event to the mayor for his chosen charities

CLUB TOURNAMENT

Saturday 5th September saw the ‘Open' day, with the ‘Veterans' holding their Finals day on the 12th. As could be expected, the weather was very different for the two days with cold damp conditions on one and warm bright sunshine on the other!

The Open Finals saw some great matches, highlighted by Jordan Young retaining the Singles trophy for the 3rd successive year, beating last year's finalist Callum Eckersley in a very competitive final which saw Jordan even throwing his racket on occasions (he claims he was trying to get the ball!!). In between a Red Arrows flyover (its not what you know but who!), other finals saw Charlie Hocknell winning the Plate competition against Mark Wakefield and Sue Hayes-Smith and Kirsty Woodward beating Louise Davies and Kim Bennett in a long 3 setter in the ladies doubles.

Due to a rather wet week some finals were held over and the 12th saw those finals and Veterans finals played out on a glorious day. Jordan Young returned to partner Steve Bannister in an excellent match for the mens doubles lasting a good 2 and a half hours to edge out Peter Wardlaw and Tom Minshull and then a rather damaged Ian Walker held on to beat Peter Dallow in great Veterans Singles final.

In other finals, Ray Booth added to his tally of trophies in the veterans mens doubles partnering Mike Dale against Kevin Hughes and Dave Lonsdale in another gruelling match. However, Dave Lonsdale had his revenge in then pairing up with Kim Bennett to win the Veterans Mixed Doubles against a strong Paul Minshull/Sue Hayes-Smith pairing. This was Kim's first victory, having lost in a final the previous week. However not content with just one victory, she then partnered Val Sims to win the veterans ladies doubles against Janet Hirst and Margaret Bamford.

Supporting both days, a big thank you to the many members who contributed to the afternoon tea's which meant that watching good tennis from the balcony, overlooking the courts was more pleasurable than usual.

CONGLETON TOWN MAYORS TOURNAMENT

With Spring in the air, members of the Tennis Club came out in force on Saturday 4th April to compete in the annual staging of the Town Mayor's ‘American Tournament' and in the process raised £175 for the Mayor's charities. The Mayor, Denis Murphy was in attendance for the afternoon to view proceedings and enjoy Tea and a tour of the Club. He also would have been pleased to see a number of juniors competing, considering his support this year for junior organizations.

A total of 38 players were involved, playing a series of round robin matches before the winners moved to a knockout stage. In the first semi-final the Hon. Secretary Marion Doe and Mark Smith overcame the challenge from Ben Waddacor and Emily Walker; whilst in the second, Ian Walker and June Fisher (previously England's Over 55's champion and Captain of the Over 55's England team), who was making a welcome return to the Club - were victorious against Clive Anstice and Jeannette Walker (meaning that there was to be no domestic rivalry between the Walker's in the final)

The final itself was a closely fought affair, with the ladies section being decided on the final point! The winners were Mark Smith and June Fisher, who received the trophy after defeating Ian Walker and Marion Doe. A big thank you to all who supported this very successful event in the Tennis Club's calendar.
